Out of many fertility treatments, IUI Treatment is a well-known and efficient method. IUI or Intrauterine Insemination is a fertility treatment in which sperm are placed inside the woman’s uterus for the fertilization to take place. The principal objective of IUI is to increase the number of sperms that reach the fallopian tubes by easing the process of sperms travelling from the vagina to the fallopian tubes. This, in turn, increases the chances of getting pregnant.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization.
IUI treatment helps the sperms by making it easier for them to travel quickly but the sperm need to reach the fallopian tubes and fertilize the egg. This procedure is less invasive and also less expensive than In Vitro Fertilization.
When Is IUI Used?
IUI is used to assist the sperm in reaching the fallopian tubes and fertilize the egg. Hence, the most common reasons for using IUI are low sperm count and decreased sperm mobility. Apart from that, fertility specialists also select IUI as a fertility treatment in cases such as:
It is always recommended to get yourself and your partner checked up completely and proceed to any procedure with the consultation of your fertility specialist.
IUI Process
The procedure is really basic, however, it’s quite normal to feel anxious about it. It can be done in your fertility center.
In the case of a sperm donor, the semen sample will be thawed, cleaned and prepared. If not, your partner will come into the facility that day with you and provide a semen sample just like the way the male partner provides a sample for the semen analysis.
Fertility specialist will put the semen through a special cleaning method. This takes out the impurities and leaves just what’s required for fertilization.
For the method itself, you will rest on a gynecological examination table, like the ones utilized for your tests. A catheter — a little, thin tube — will be put in your cervix. You may feel some mild cramping. The washed and prepared semen will at that point be moved into your uterus through the catheter. The catheter is taken out and that is the whole procedure.
Your doctor may recommend you to rest for sometime after the process.
How Successful is IUI Treatment?
The success of IUI relies upon a few factors. If a couple has planned out several IVF cycles at different intervals, achievement rates may reach as high as 20% per cycle depending upon certain factors, for example, woman’s age, the cause of infertility, and whether fertility drugs were taken, among different factors.
When IUI and IVF are compared, IUI comes out to be less invasive and very less expensive than IVF. But its success rate is also less than IVF.
