IVF with Donor Eggs

Donor egg IVF uses an egg from a donor rather than the egg of the person receiving treatment. Fertilisation takes place in a laboratory, and an embryo may then be transferred to the recipient’s uterus. A consultation helps you understand whether this approach is appropriate for your circumstances.

When might donor eggs be discussed?

A fertility specialist may discuss donated eggs when a patient’s own eggs are unavailable or unlikely to lead to pregnancy, or when there is concern about passing on an inherited condition. The recommendation depends on an individual assessment and consideration of other options.

Understanding the treatment pathway

  • Consultation: review your medical history, previous treatment and questions.
  • Planning: discuss donor screening, consent, counselling and the proposed treatment plan.
  • Laboratory treatment: donor eggs are fertilised with sperm and monitored as embryos develop.
  • Embryo transfer and follow-up: your team explains preparation, transfer and the pregnancy-test plan.

Questions to ask before starting

Ask which assessments you need, how donor material is sourced and screened, what information is available about the donor, and what the quoted costs include. Eligibility and applicable requirements should be confirmed with the treating clinic before treatment.

Discuss your next step

Donor eggs do not guarantee pregnancy. Ask your specialist to explain the expected benefits, limitations and risks for you. Bring previous reports and a list of questions to your consultation.
