Reasons For IUI Failure- Factors, Causes, And Symptoms

IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a fertility treatment offering help to couples for achieving their dreams of parenthood.

Many couples face the problem of infertility and get anxious or depressed with it and think they are the ones facing such issues. It is not true; infertility is common nowadays among couples for several reasons. The truth behind the cause of infertility can be on both males and females. The solution to the problem of infertility is IUI (intrauterine insemination). It gives you a better chance to conceive or to get pregnant and complete your family.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a medical procedure used when the natural process of conception is impossible among couples. IUI is used where the motile sperm cells are injected into the uterus directly.  A sample of semen is taken, washed, and analyzed to ensure that the sperms carry the required traits for fertilization or not.

The treatment aims to increase the chances of fertilization among females with an increase in the count of sperm that could interact with the fallopian tubes for the development and fertilization of eggs. However, like other treatments, the success of IUI treatment does not guarantee success in every case. You might be confused about why it occurred, as IUI failure is a disheartening experience.

Symptoms of failed IUI

Symptoms of IUI failure are not specific, but if IUI treatment does not succeed, it will lead to abortion or bring your periods. Moreover, the poor quality of sperm and eggs also results in natural abortion due to the arousal of chromosomal abnormalities. It has been the most common reason for pregnancy loss in more than 85% of cases. Let’s delve into several factors affecting IUI failure, shedding light on the complex interplay of biological and situational factors that can impact its success.

Causes of IUI failure

  • Age

The success rate of IUI treatment is higher in females under 35 and declines after that. Advanced maternal age often leads to lowering ovarian reserve and the quality of eggs. The chance of IUI failure is higher among women after age 40 as fertility decreases and the chance of complications or risks increases. IUI is not beneficial for older women, so it is only recommended for the age group of 20-35.

  • Poor quality of eggs

Poor quality eggs or unhealthy eggs result in the development of abnormal embryos, which may lead to congenital disabilities and miscarriage. Therefore, the tests like ultrasound monitoring and ovarian reserve testing are carried out before the IUI treatment.

  • Poor quality of sperm

A sperm not being strong enough and motile hampers fertilization as it does not reach the fallopian tubes due to poor quality. Semen analysis is conducted to ensure the quality and quantity of sperm.

  • Time

The injection of sperm in the uterus should be done within 24 hours for the process of fertilization during ovulation, or else the eggs’ disintegration will occur in the fallopian tubes.

  • Issues with ovulation

Lack of ovulation or improper ovulation will lead to insufficient egg cells for fertilization.

  • Endometrial lining

Inadequate or improper endometrial lining can lead to miscarriage or failure in implantation. Thus, the quality and thickness of the endometrial lining need to be evaluated with hysteroscopy and ultrasound.

  • Progesterone

Progesterone is a hormone that is necessary for maintaining the pregnancy. Thus, a lack of hormones or progesterone deficiency will lead to miscarriage or failed IUI.

  • Lifestyle

Smoking, intoxication, and poor diet affect fertility negatively. A healthy lifestyle is recommended for improving the success rate of IUI.

Other factors that create a base for IUI failures, including those above, are incorrect timings, high-stress levels, emotional imbalance, blocked fallopian tubes, unresponsive ovaries, implantation issues, etc. IUI failure is attributed to both situational and biological factors. You should be prepared for IUI failure as it does not yield success in every cycle. Being prepared and willing to adapt the treatment as designed will help you in achieving your desired outcome.

Factors influencing the success results of IUI

The success of IUI treatment cannot be assured or assumed as a response towards it is diverse as per different couples. Moreover, each individual’s success is unique, and their reaction towards the action is diverse from each other. Remember, factors affecting your IUI failure might not affect others, so focusing on your health is more critical for success. Though some of the fundamental factors that determine the success rate of IUI are-

  • Age of the women
  • Drug usage
  • Parameters and quality of Sperms
  • Ovarian reserve
  • The primary cause of infertility
  • Unidentified conditions of fertility
